The door for Defense Against the Dark Arts was wide open early in the morning. The room was filled with a slight leather sent, a smell related to the numerous travels Archer had taken. The room was dark, only lit by the several candles lit all through out the room. The board on the side had scribbles that made out to say: There will be no misbehaving from when the student enters the door until he or she leaves! 1st - Petrificus Totalus, Incendio 2nd - Homemun Revelio, Tarantallegra 3rd - Ascendio, Reducio 4th - Protego, Stupefy
All the desks were lined up, the dummies used were set out. Yet the professor wasn't at his desk. In fact Archer wasn't even in the room. He didn't feel the need to sit in the room and properly greet all of the students as they walked in. (Class will be open for posting 02/08/12)

Alex arrived at his Defense Against the Dark Arts class first. He stopped right inside the classroom. There was no professor. Shrugging, he walked in anyway and took a seat. He hoped the class wouldn't be too difficult.

With a yawn, Ailey shuffled into the classroom. She took note the professor wasn't there the second she walked in. But she was too tired to act on it. She had spent the better part of the night helping a younger student with Astronomy homework that was assigned over the summer. She sat down next to Alex with a smile.
"Hello!"

Defense Against the Dark Arts was the one class that Katrina was looking forward to the most. Sure the title said 'Defense,' but she was certain there was something in it that she could use on Adrian if he ever went after her mother again.
Ready to master the subject, she took a seat.

A little upset there was no one his his year, Julien took a seat by Ailey but didn't talk to her. She seemed too tired to even be able to hold down a conversation for long. Instead he took out a piece of paper and wrote down the spells he was going to be learning about.

Cosette happily bounded into the classroom. She was incredibly excited about the school year. For one thing she was made Quidditch captain.
Spotting Julien, she took a seat next to him. "'ello, Julien. Guess what? I 'ave been made Quidditch Captain zis year!"
She was excited to see someone in her year and also excited about Quidditch in her class.

Archer followed Cosette into the room quietly, shutting the door as he did. He lifted his cup from his desk, finishing it off, and set it back down. His eyes scanned his room, making note of the students. There wasn't many of them but he didn't expect that there would be. This was the younger student class and many ended up coming late. He sighed and took his place next to a dummy.
"As you can see on the board, we are learning spells and casting them. If you did your reading you will know what the spells that you will be casting are."
He motioned to the first dummy on his left. All the dummies were lined up in a row.
"The first years will use this dummy to practice petrificus totalus and incendio. This second years this one, and so on. You will know if your spell was sucessful. If it is not, the dummy will not react at all. You may begin."
(No god-moding. 1st-3rd years will not be 100% successful on their first try.)

Despite herself, Katrina was feeling a bit nervous. This was the first time she got to cast a spell since she found out she was a witch. And of course she was the first in the class.
But not to worry, she usually excelled at just about everything that she tried and she was sure that she would at this as well.
She raised her wand at the dummy next to Professor Strele. What in the world was petrificus totalus? She had never bothered to do the assigned reading. Oh well, she thought. She would find out soon enough.
Taking a deep breath, she cast the spell.
Petrificus Totalus!"
The spell completely missed the dummy but nearly took out the Professor.

Julien perked up as the professor walked in. He loved how the class was almost relaxed but yet the professor held everyone's attention. No one dared act up and challenge his authority.
He stood up when they were directed to start casting spells. He continued to the front, staring at the dummy and repeating protego in his head. Protego was a defense spell that directed an on coming spell from hitting him. He wandered how the dummy was going to react to him casting it without a spell thrown in his direction.
He snickered as Katrina completely missed her dummy and the spell went straight for the professor. Julien pulled out his wand and pointed it at the dummy.
"Protego!"
As he did, he knew immediately he cast the spell correctly because the dummy seemed to fall back slightly. He smiled and looked at the professor to see if it was right.

(I'm going to say she was already in the classroom before class began)
Maya watched as others got up to try. This only left Maya's eyes widening with enjoyment as the first year completely missed her target and threw it at the professor. Perhaps this was going to be a good class.
Following the others, Maya approached her target and lifted her wand. It had been several months since she had cast a spell which only made her worry more. She hadn't done the reading and didn't know what ascendio did. Although she guessed it made the object ascend.
"Ascendio,"
Maya watched as her spell seemed to have no affect on the dummy except make it wobble for a second.
